In this lesson, we will be learning the ins and outs of a technique called double knitting. We will be working in the round, knitting the front and backside of a patterned cowl at the same time. This creates a smooth stockinette fabric on both sides, with reversed images on either side. Written pattern instructions will include how to read and work the chart and a brief introduction to double knitting. This is a great project for high contrasting colors. The double-layered fabric makes for a warm, sturdy cowl that stands up to block the wind and keeps you nice and toasty. Once learned, you will be able to apply this skill to future double knit projects.

Supplies Needed:

  • Total 280 yds (256 m) DK weight yarn [140 yds (128 m) each of Light Color (LC) and Dark Color (DC)] You may require more yardage if you do not unravel and reuse yarn from your gauge swatch.
  • A small scrap of an additional contrasting for color for optional embroidery.
  • Size US 5/ 3.75 mm circular needles (22-24in circulars work best. Longer cables can be magic looped.)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and optional embroidery details.
  • 12 Stitch markers

Homework:
Students may wish to swatch with their yarn and needles ahead of class.
Gauge: 16 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette

All recorded classes are available for viewing until Sunday May 15, 2022.
